Cho Jung Woo: What’s the Rush • TLCS Preamble

“What’s The Rush?” is a piece written for a contemporary 5-piece band. It attempts to blur the boundary between serious compositions and jazz by infusing modern sounds and elements, one of which is improvisation in a controlled manner. With an overarching ABA form, It begins by presenting a simple pentatonic main theme followed by an improvised solo section which is recapped by the main theme with developments. (Music starts at 1:44) Cho Jung Woo is trained in various styles of music from classical to jazz and was originally trained as a classical pianist and singer. Jung’s interest in modern music also led him to explore genres such as soul, R&B, pop and indie. Often spotted at local music gigs and professional stages, his music draws from diverse influences from HYUKOH and Honne to Beethoven and Chopin. He recently held his debut performance with his band, Band Puleun at Zeppelin & Co. as part of their performance series, “Cicada Plays”, which presented artistes such as Kevin Loh and Rick Smith. Soon after this debut, the band also performed at RIF 2019 (Rock Indie Festival) which featured other prominent local artistes such as iNCH Chua, Linying, and brb. A curious artist, Jung has graduated from his major in composition and arranging at LASALLE College of the Arts, striving to hone his unique sound by blending in all of his influences.
